If this sounds unique, that's because it is! The Room With A View is the first Pinhole Yurt Camera in Canada, perhaps even the first in the world. All of the descriptive words, "pinhole", "yurt", and camera, are important aspects of this project to understand. The camera is in the shape of a yurt and is large enough to contain a group of 12-15 students. It is also a camera obscura for demonstration and teaching, AND a fully operational camera.
The choice of the YURT, for the camera's design, was deliberate for two reasons. Because the Yurt is a circular structure, it becomes a camera capable of making a 360 degree panoramic photograph up to thirty feet in length. There are five pinholes spaced equally around the perimeter, each pinhole exposes and overlaps the next, creating the panoramic effect. The Yurt, although not historically significant to this country, is as old a dwelling place to the nomads of central Asia, as the concept of camera obscura is to the philosophers of ancient China and Greece.
